The Craftsman Behind the Work

Restoring the utility and dignity of the tools we use every day.

We live in an era of disposable tools. When a blade dulls, the instinct is to replace it or run it through a pull-through sharpener that strips steel and ruins the temper.

That is not how your tools were meant to be treated.

Craftsman working on sharpening knife at bench.

My name is Ben Kilian. I'm a knife sharpener and blade restoration craftsman operating out of Lynchburg, Virginia.

I've been sharpening knives for fifteen years, long before it became a business. It started as a hobbyist's obsession with edge geometry and steel behavior, and it never stopped. By training I'm a biologist, which means precision and careful observation aren't just values I claim — they're habits I've built a career around. I look at a blade the same way I look at anything else: methodically, with attention to what the material is actually telling me.

I started Stronghold Guild because I kept seeing good knives ruined by bad sharpening. Aggressive grinders, wrong angles, too much steel removed too fast. A quality knife is a long-term tool. It deserves deliberate, informed maintenance, not a thirty-second run through a machine.

Every blade I work on is evaluated individually. I look at the steel, the existing geometry, the wear pattern, and the damage before I touch it. Then I sharpen it the way that specific knife needs to be sharpened, not the way that's fastest.

I work on one blade at a time. That's the only way to do it right.

How I work

For standard kitchen knives, pocket knives, and utility blades, I use the Work Sharp Ken Onion Elite MK2 with precision angle guides. It's a controlled, repeatable system that establishes correct geometry without overheating the steel.

For Japanese knives and premium chef's steel, I hand-hone on a progressive sequence of Japanese waterstones. No belts, no heat. Just stones, water, and time.

Every job is logged in a physical Edge Service Record that documents the bevel angles set, the steel type, the condition on arrival, and care notes specific to that knife. You get a copy with every return.
